Step in realisation of new Demokwekerij Westland

On Wednesday 25 November the official Kick-off of the new building of Demokwekerij Westland on the Greenport Hortic Campus Westland location found place. Here the plans for the new building were publicized. The first steps were set earlier this month with the purchase of the ground of Trade Parc Westland, what is in front of flower auction FloraHolland Naaldwijk.

During the kick-off, which found place at Flora Holland, businesses, schools, knowledge institutions and the municipality all came together for information about the new location, the future of the knowledge centre and the future developments. Municipality Westland, the architect of the building, Lentiz MBO Greenport, Demokwekerij Westland and Greenport Food and Flower Experience all told something about the new campus.demo20

For the Demokwekerij this means that a new greenhouse complex for research will be build and next to that a permanent horticulture exhibition is build where national and international visitors can see all the horticulture techniques. This exposition will be set up together with Lentiz MBO Greenport and Greenport Food and Flower Experience. With the new school of Lentiz MBO Greenport in the building the first phase of the Greenport Horti Campus Westland will be realized. On this first petal, education, research, innovation and business live meets each other.

Around 150 people were at the meeting, where after the conversation with the panel and questions from the audience, the building board officially got revealed by the investors (Lentiz MBO Greenport, Demokwekerij Westland, GFFX and Municipality Westland). If everything goes according plan than in the spring of 2016 the first pole would be in the ground, in the fall of 2017 the move will find place.

Demokwekerij Westland in Colombia

Demokwekerij Westland is together with Lentiz involved at the realisation of a knowledge- and training centre for the horticulture in Colombia for education and training. A few participants of Demokwekeirj Westland are also involved in the project. At the project next to the Dutch companies also Colombian organisations are involved, including universities, branch organizations and companies from the horticulture sector. The project is supported by the Dutch government through a so called stimulation measurement ‘transition facility’. Colombia is next to Vietnam and South-Africa marked by the Dutch government as ‘transition country’ which means that these countries are experience a rapid transition towards a modern economy and market opportunities offer for the Dutch Topsectors, where Tuinbouw & Uitgangsmaterialen are part of.

The Project ‘Centro de Capacitación y Conocimiento Colombia’ has as goal, to make the Dutch Horticulture available for Colombian growers through training programs and demonstration projects, but also to contribute to the sustainability and efficiency improvement of the vegetable production in the greenhouse and floriculture in Colombia. The Dutch participants will bring in a transition facility in the form of a research- and demonstration greenhouse, which contribute to the education- and training programs, whereby the trainers are trained the so-called ‘train-the-trainer program.’ At this moment the definitive economic and technical feasibility of the project are estimated and in dialogue with the Dutch government and all Dutch and Colombian partners are decided if the project can definitely find place. To come to this definitive decision we worked with all partners for the las month on an optimal project form.

In October Demokwekerij Westland has visited Colombia to speak with the Colombian universities DSC_0024 safdasdfabout the collaboration for the training program. The Colombian partners showed a lot of enthusiasm to make this a successful collaboration, and a perfect location is also found at an already existing research facility for the horticulture at one of the participating universities. Demokwekerij also participated in a few company visits at horticulture companies in Colombia, the floriculture fair in Bogotá called Proflora was also visited. Here useable knowledge was gained for the project and conversations were conducted with various organisations and companies which are active in the Colombian horticulture. The definitive ‘green light’ for the project we expect at the beginning of February 2016, when we ‘dot the I’s and crossed the t’s’. A lot of work needs to be done for this project, but with the changes this project in Colombia offers for our participants and relations, is this an challenge Demokwekerij would like to take.

Proeftuin Zwaagdijk in Hillenraad100

Succesfull start Fresh Academy in Vietnam!

Busy crop protection days

With a turnout of 400 enthusiastic visitors we look back at three successful crop protection days. On 23, 24 and 29 of September Demokwekerij Westland organized the crop protection knowledge days. In collaboration with Van Iperen, Brinkman, Horticoop and several suppliers of these trading companies, Demokwekerij Westland organized these days. Each trading company had a separate day, whereby they gave the possibility, to their clients, to catch up and discuss the crop protection for the cultivation.Gewasbescherming

Next to a presentation from Demokwekerij Westland and from the trading company, visits has been made in small groups to the cultivation departments and crop protection research area. These researches were focused on treating botrytis, snails and more in various horticultural crops. On the knowledge days there was also enough time for growers to ask questions, have discussions with the specialists of the trading companies and crop protection producers.

The knowledge days, which also counts towards extending the spraying license, will be held again in April 2016, these days will be focused on the vegetable sector.

Project Green Juniors started at bij Demokwekerij Westland

Connection education and business

The schoolyear is already started and with that also a new project called Green Juniors. In collaboration with Hogeschool InHolland students will work on questions from the business life.

The students are working on a new cultivation system for cultivation out of the ground. The new A3CF cultivation system is a cultivation system for flowers, vegetables, herbs and plants where natural basic principles are used. Through the Current Flow (CF in A3CF) the crop gets the chance to take as much water as they need which is flowing under the plants. In the project Green Juniors, chrysanthemum are cultivated on these A3CF gutters to map the changes and possibilities.fgdfg

With accompaniment of chrysanthemum growers, Hogeschool InHolland, Demokwekerij Westland and A3Technology, fourth year students work for 20 weeks on this project. Researcher Jeroen Sanders from Demokwekerij Westland accompanies this project and tells: “ It is really good to accompany the students with the practical questions from the business world. The good thing about this is that the student instead of learning at school, they are learning in a practical way by physically doing research at a company. The students are first going to research if they can optimize the watering, but they are also going to look at the fluctuating of the plant density. Various aspects what they have learned at school are being put into practice.”

New edition crop protection days

This edition is focused on the floriculture sector..

After a successful edition in April this year, a new crop protection day, focused on the floriculture, finds place at 23, 24, 29 of September. These days are organised in cooperation with Horticoop, Van Iperen, Brinkman and various suppliers of these trading companies.

School started…. also at Demokwekerij!

Primary school to university , they know the way to Demokwekerij ..

Late August / early September schools have started again in the Netherlands, and that means that Demokwekerij Westland can welcome many new students. Demokwekerij Westland organizes and facilitates various training courses and practical days, all related to horticulture sector.

Lentiz MBO Greenport, MBO2
In the last School year Demokwekeirj Westland facilitated, for the first time, the practical aspect of the Lentiz Course Plant Cultivation and Agro Logistics. That course was successful last year and that is why we organise these days for this school year again. The coming 30 weeks, every Tuesday, 15 students will be at Demokwekerij Westland to learn everything about horticulture, technique, cultivation and logistics, and all this with a practical approach. The students will start various cultivations, taking care of the crops, arranging the climate and will be doing harvesting work. The technical parts are also treated through practical assignments where use of tools and materials are the core focus.

To facilitate the practical assignments a lot of materials are needed; from plant material to packing’s and from seeds to tools. Demokwekerij Westland is there for happy to report that these companies contribute to this education: Proeftuin Zwaagdijk, Modiform, Beekenkamp Verpakkingen, Bayer CropScience, Royal Brinkman, MTS Batist Pot en Perkplanten, Enza zaden, Van Den Bos Flowerbulbs, Bernard Sanders Aandrijftechniek, van Iperen, Revaho, Jiffy and Potplantenkwekerij Sjaloom.

HBO Cultivation expertOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Inholland and Lentiz MBO Greenport, have set up together, a training program ‘cultivation expert’. Demokwekerij Westland serves as a training location and a number of training days got filled substantively. In this program the following topics are central in the course: cultivation technique, lighting, fertilization, climate and water. For this, several guest speakers are engaged, and various participants of Demokwekerij Westland are involved.

And further…..
In collaboration with its network Demokwekerij Westland obviously thinks about new training and education. For example, ROC Mondriaan Delft ( with the mechatronics training ) will visit Demokwekerij Westland to be informed about IDC Robotica (innovation centre, theme: Robotica) in relation to the horticulture sector.

Attention is also paid to ‘ Business for Horticulture ‘ through a training developed by HAS University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with Flynth advisors and accountants BV , partners of this program are InHolland University , Horticoop , Greenhouse Grows, ABN AMRO and Rabobank. A number of meetings of this program in Business for Horticulture North and South Holland found in the academic year 2015 – 2016 place at Demokwekerij Westland.
