The exposition department grows to 30 companies..

Mardenkro is a new participant at Demokwekerij Westland. Mardenkro sees the Demokwekerij as a good place to show their products to a bigger audience.

“The participation in the Demokwekerij gives us the possibility to demonstrate year-round to (inter)national public what our products can do for glasshouses and plastic film greenhouses. Next to that Mardenkro supports the way the Demokwekerij shares knowledge about growing and techniques to the growers. As a company from the South of the Netherlands it is also a great base to meet customers and relations in the Glass City of The Netherlands.”

Study visit Clusius College at Demokwekerij Westland

Sharing Knowledge at the top….

On Wednesday May 27, 15 students of the Clusius College in Hoorn went for a study visit to Demokwekerij Westland. A special curriculum was created for this group.

The afternoon started with a tour through Demokwekerij Westland where new techniques where discussed and research departments have been visited. After the tour the group got split into four groups to work on divers workshops with assignments. Each group was assigned a type of crop , these were tomatoes, bedding plants , orchid and chrysanthemum . The students were given three tasks to work out at the first assignment, the students had to work out the watercourse circle of crops. Then the students were instructed to create a complete production department of 180 square meters.

With the eye on the future of the horticulture and these future horticulture contributors the students were asked hoOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAw the greenhouse of the future looks like and to draw it. At the end of the day all the students presented their assignments to the fellow students and tutors after which they were discussed. Clusius college was satisfied with this practical application of the study visit.

Demokwekerij converted into international plant show

An annual event…

From 9 till 12 June the Flower Trials find place at Demokwekerij Westland. The companies Sakata and Van Der Bos Flowerbulbs will show their newest products in the area of breeding, but they will also show the latest trends in the area of flowers and plants. The entire Demokwekerij will be transformed this week into an exhibition space filled with plants and flowers.

Flower Trials isn’t only organized at Demokwekerij Westland. On 30 different locations in Westland and Aalsmeer in the Netherlands and Rheinland Westfalen in Germany 49 breeders will show their innovations in the pot and bedding plants, their creative concepts and their very wide rangeflower.

Demokwekerij Westland will sell the plants from Sakata on Saturday the 13th of June. From 10.00 till 15.00 everyone is more than welcome to pick out a plant they want to buy and the price can be self-determined. The profit of this day goes to care bakery: Het Blauwe Hek.

Svensson new participant at Demokwekerij Westland

The knowledge platform expands ..

Svensson has become a new participant at Demokwekerij Westland. Svensson believes it is important to support Innovation and Demonstration Projects to contribute to a sustainable horticulture sector. They see Demokwekerij Westland as a good platform to build a bridge between producers and suppliers. Together with (inter) national leaders and leading research institutions Svensson is daily engaged in research and development of new or improving existing screens. Svensson advises growers to optimize use of screens. Svensson wants to know the experiences of growers with screens. Simultaneously Svensson their story also lost to them. Demokwekerij Westland bring the parties together and that can be shared experiences.

Svensson continuously strives for a better climate for each crop and advises the grower how tIMG_0300o optimize the screen use for a maximum efficiency. Growers know their crops like no other and know exactly how plants respond to climate change. With Svenssons experiences with climate screens, they are able to give advice and indicate whether there are other solutions possible, which growers haven’t thought of. Along with the grower, they seek the most favourable growth climate in the greenhouse.

Inholland new participant at Demokwekerij Westland

The demonstration area expands with a knowledge institutions ..

Inholland Delft has become a new participant at Demokwekerij Westland. Inholland sees Demokwekerij Westland as a good place for students to gain knowledge.

“Demokwekerij Westland has developed into an important hub for knowledge from, and for the Dutch horticulture. It is a central point where entrepreneurs, suppliers and knowledge institutions meet. Therefore, the study Horticulture and Agribusiness of Inholland Delft will participate at Demokwekerij Westland. Demokwekerij Westland plays an important role as a practical environment in our education. It offers the green HBO student insight in daily practice, “said Hans Inholland TekenenLigtenberg of Inholland Delft.

Demokwekerij Westland and Inholland Delft will set up the Horticulture Innovation Desk, where growers can submit their questions whereby students and growers look for solutions together. Demokwekerij 2.0

International knowledge and innovation centre..

If everything goes according to plan Demokwekerij Westland will be renewed. Demokwekerij Westland will be moved to the site where Greenport Campus Westland Horticulture has to rise, situated in front of the flower auction FloraHolland Naaldwijk. The management of Demokwekerij Westland and the board of the foundation Proeftuin Zwaagdijk, the parent company of the demo nursery, the next time will be used to reach a final decision for this development. Particularly in the area of financing of this ambitious project is still a challenge for the organization.

The demokwekerij will build, at this location, a new greenhouse complex for research and will build together with Lentiz MBO Westland Greenport and Greenport Food & Flower Experience an exhibition and demonstration centre. With the new school building Lentiz Greenport MBO will build on the site, the first phase of Greenport Westland Horticulture Campus will be realized, a complex were education, research, innovation and business meet. This campus is, according to Peet van Adrichem, one of the most important investments in the future: “It is important to attract and strenghten the connection between education and business. Today’s youth is our future and we must work hard to inspire these students for the horticulture sector. be working hard to inspire these young people in horticulture. But not only the young students are important, internalization is also a topic we want to put on the map, because I think that there are interesting challenges at the international market.”

Successful knowledge days crop protection

On 15, 16 and 23 of April, Demokwekerij Westland organized the crop protection knowledge days. In collaboration with Van Iperen, Brinkman, Horticoop and several suppliers of these trading companies, Demokwekerij Westland organized these days. Each trading company had a separate day, whereby they gave the possibility, to their clients, to catch up and discuss the crop protection for the vegetable cultivation. With a turnout of more than 175 enthusiastic visitors, we look back on three successful days.

Next to a presentation from Demokwekerij Westland and from the trading company, visits has been made in small groups to the cultivation departments and crop protection research area. These researches were focused on treating botrytis, powdery mildew, aphids, thrips and caterpillars in various horticultural crops. As an additional topic LED lightning and emission of water could be Gewasbeschermingsdagdiscussed. During these days Demokwekerij Westland got rated by Bureau Erkenningen with the end result of a 10.
